This past year has been such a one most of us have never experienced before. “Unprecedented” has been a frequently used term for it. Perhaps we can say with William Wordsworth “The world is too much with us….” Therefore, it is good that we have chosen to fast at the beginning of a new year.
Perhaps Psalm 27: 8 is a good starting point as it was for David. He says, “My heart has heard you say, ‘Come and talk with me.’ And my heart responds, ‘Lord, I am coming.’” (NLT) The Lord wants to speak with us to let us know that we are not alone in our struggles and confusion. Actually, He has been with us the entire time.
He wants to comfort us and help us get ready for whatever this new year will bring. Through our fasting, praying, and reading His Word, He will prepare us. We have to get away with Him from the noise of this world – the noise that tries to shut Him out.
Through our “conversation” and stillness with Him during these twenty-one days our minds will be transformed by the renewing of our minds and will not be conformed to this world (Romans 12: 2). You will not go alone through this new year; God will be with you. Just say as David did – “Lord, I am coming.” He is waiting.
